- OACP Executive Director, Ron Bain, and Chief Jennifer Evans participated in attended a meeting of the Future of Policing Advisory Committee (FPAC) this week. One of the key issues discussed was the Government of Ontario’s proposal to reform the Police Services Act, including employment and discipline issues. Members of the OACP Executive and the OACP Police Legal Advisors Committee plan to have a follow-up strategy session today to discuss our response to issues raised at the FPAC meeting.
- Media reports on recent Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigations illustrate the need for the Province to move forward with the recommendations proposed by Justice Michael Tulloch on police oversight. In the OACP’s view, Justice Tulloch’s recommendations concerning the SIU would address at least some of the ambiguity regarding the SIU mandate, what police can and cannot say when the mandate is invoked, etc.
- The OACP continues to monitor proposed changes to the Ambulance Act, including the introduction of pilot projects allowing paramedics on fire trucks. A briefing note on a recent meeting, which included members of the Emergency Services Steering Committee and arbitration for police and firefighters has been shared with all Chiefs of Police/OPP Commissioner.
