Ontario’s police leaders welcome the introduction of new Safer Ontario Act (Police Services Act, 2017 ) today by the Honourable Marie-France Lalonde, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services. We appreciate that the Government of Ontario has actively listened to the views of Ontario’s police leaders and believe that the proposals in the draft legislation reflect much of the input we’ve offered during Future of Policing Advisory Committee (FPAC) discussions and with meetings with the Ministers and their senior staff.
We encourage the Government to remain committed to acting quickly on the development of the required supporting Regulations for this important legislation. The Regulations are where much of the operational details concerning the new Act will be identified. The OACP is committed to continuing to work with the government on the Regulations and making the public’s interest in accountable and transparent police organizations paramount.
As well as welcoming the introduction the new PSA, Ontario’s police leader look forward to the introduction of separate legislation to govern oversight of police in Ontario. The OACP has consistently and strongly supported the recommendations made by Justice Michael Tulloch on police oversight and a strong governance model. We appreciate that the government intends that these be implemented in separate oversight legislation to be introduced by the Attorney General. We urge that the legislation be introduced soon.
