OACP Issues New Crime Prevention Resources

Ontario’s police leaders were honoured to have the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, join them in kicking off a provincial crime prevention campaign launched by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) on February 27, 2019. The campaign theme of You Are Crime Prevention emphasizes the power of the individual and communities to prevent crime before it happens.

The new You Are Crime Prevention booklet will be used throughout the year by Ontario police services to raise awareness of many types of crimes, including:

  • Suspicious activities and why you need to be aware and alert.

  • Cannabis impairment and how making the wrong choices in the new era of legal cannabis can lead to tragic results.

  • Financial scams that continue to grow in both numbers and impact:
         -     Identity theft
         -     Bank and credit card fraud
         -     On-line scams
         -     Lottery scams
         -     “Phishing” email scams
         -     Auto insurance fraud

  • “Porch Pirate” thefts, where on-line purchases are stolen after delivery to your property.

The OACP has also issued a new resource document to raise awareness about the true nature of organized crime in Ontario. Bringing Organized Crime Out of the Shadows was developed by the OACP Organized Crime Committee and provides easy-to-read information about the reality of organized criminal activity in our province.
