Legislative Overhauling of Policing Begins

Ontario’s police leaders have welcomed the introduction of new legislation that will oversee policing in the Province as a positive step toward our collective goal of accountable and professional policing.

Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Marie-France Lalonde introduced Bill 175, An Act to Implement Measures with Respect to Policing, Coroners and Forensic Laboratories and to Enact, Amend or Repeal Certain Other Statutes and Revoke a Regulation or the Safer Ontario Act, 2017.  This legislation is an omnibus Bill and contains numerous smaller Bills.

The proposed Bill, known as the Safer Ontario Act, 2017, would repeal and replace the Police Services Act, amend the Coroners Act, create five new acts, and make amendments to various other pieces of legislation as indicated below:

Schedule 1 Police Services Act, 2017

Schedule 2 Policing Oversight Act, 2017

Schedule 3 Ontario Policing Discipline Tribunal Act, 2017

Schedule 4 Ontario Special Investigations Unit Act, 2017

Schedule 5 Consequential Amendments

Schedule 6 Coroners Act

Schedule 7 Missing Persons Act, 2017

Schedule 8 Forensic Laboratories Act, 2017

Our OACP Police Legal Advisors Committee met on November 9 to go over Bill 175 in detail.  Please contact Joe Couto, Director of Government Relations and Communications, at jcouto@oacp.ca if you have any questions or comments.
