ALTERNATIVES TO POLICE COURT SECURITY AND PRISONER TRANSPORTATION
Approved at the 49th Annual General meeting held June 28, 2000
WHEREAS the provision of court security and prisoner transportation has been mandated to police services; and
WHEREAS the deployment of police personnel respecting court security and prisoner transportation is having a significant negative impact on available front line police resources; and
WHEREAS the use of police personnel for non-core police functions constitutes the ineffective use of police resources; and
WHEREAS non-core police functions can be carried out through alternative measures; and
WHEREAS at this time, the efficient use of police resources represents a critical need respecting the ability of police agencies to provide effective community based services intended to ensure optimum safety, security and quality of life for our citizens and police officers.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police request the Government of Ontario to enact appropriate legislation to divest police agencies of all responsibilities respecting court security and prisoner transportation beyond the first court appearance.
